Anion-directed assembly: the first fluoride-directed double helix
Chemical communications, 2003•pubs.rsc.org
… To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there have been no reports of neutral synthetic
ligands forming helices around anions, a surprising fact considering the considerable body
of work amassed on amidic anion receptors over the last ten years 15 and the importance of
amide groups in stabilising helical structures in proteins. In this communication, we report
the solid-state anion-directed assembly properties of two isophthalamide clefts including the
first example of a helix formed by anion templation of an amide ligand. … We have shown …

The crystal structures of anion complexes of two nitro-aromatic functionalised isophthalamides are reported; the structures reveal assembly around anions in the solid-state and in the case of the fluoride complex of receptor 2, the formation of a double helix.
