Abstract A Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence (TXRF) methodology, employing burn-leach
test, was developed to assess the quality of SiC layer in tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated
UO 2 particles prepared in BARC. The coated particles were heated at 1,123 K for about 96
h to constant weight. The calcined particles, thus obtained, were then heated in suprapure
concentrated nitric acid. The supernatant was analysed for trace elements by TXRF. No
uranium was detected in this supernatant solution. The study demonstrates the good quality …

Application of TXRF for burn leach test of TRISO coated UO2 particles of CHTR fuel

[en] A simple TXRF method to assess the quality of SiC coating in UO 2 tristructural isotropic
(TRISO) coated particles was developed. The method consists of heating the TRISO coated
particles at 850℃ for about 96 hours to constant weight and then boiling the residue
obtained in suprapure concentrated nitric acid for about one hour. Presence of any uranium
in the supernatant nitric acid is indicative of cracked SiC layers. No uranium could be found
in the supernatant suprapure nitric acid, analysed by TXRF, used for such burn leach test in …
