In response to a report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology,

In response to a report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, President Obama issued a challenge to the U.S. education system to create more than 1,000 new STEM-focused schools, including 200 high schools. Inclusive STEM-focused high schools--which focus their efforts on females, minorities, and students who are first in their families to attend college--offer one promising approach. As stand-alone schools, schools within schools, or school programs, inclusive STEM high schools accept students on the basis of their interest in STEM rather than on the basis of aptitude or prior achievement, and they prepare students with the mathematics and science experiences they need to succeed in a STEM college major through a program of greater depth and breadth than is typically required for high school graduation.
