Global climate classifications were originally constructed in order to designate the manifold
existing local climates to an adequate number of climate types and to determine the spatial
distribution of these types on the basis of climatic data for a reference period. Thus, climate
classifications are introduced in order to reflect the mean spatial climate characteristics.
