Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common motor disability of childhood, and despite technological advancements in medicine, the prevalence of CP has not decreased in developing countries in part due to life-preserving measures now available for the largest subset of children with CP, those who are born prematurely. 1 CP is defined as “a group of permanent disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitation, that are attributed to non-progressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain. The motor disorders of CP are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication, and behavior, by epilepsy; and by secondary musculoskeletal problems. 2” This expanded definition published in 2006 followed an international workshop where discussion took place about including common impairments and comorbidities observed in CP in the definition as well as its resultant impact on function.
