We compare two theoretical approaches to didactics of mathematics, which have developed
independently at different periods of time: the Metaphor Approach to mathematics teaching
and learning and the Basic Ideas (“Grundvorstellungen”) approach of the German school of
didactics of mathematics. We find close connections as well as some differences: the
“poietic”(concept generating) role of “Grundvorstellungen” does not seem to have been
developed hitherto, in contrast with the case of metaphors.
