This paper will explore the prosodic phrasing of scrambled sentences in Japanese.
Specifically, it investigates constraints that can account for the prosodic structure of
scrambled sentences as in (1, 1),(1, 2), and (1, 3). Haig (1976) made the observation about
the prosodic structure of the Japanese scrambled sentence that corresponds to its syntactic
structure: A pause is necessary after the scrambled phrase in long-distance scrambling but it
is not necessary in short-distance scrambling. This is illustrated in (1, 1) and (1, 2). Below,[] …
