Cytomegalovirus infection and progression towards AIDS in haemophiliacs with human immunodeficiency virus infection

A Webster, DG Cook, VC Emery, CA Lee, JE Grundy… - The Lancet, 1989 - Elsevier
To examine whether cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection could accelerate progression of
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection to AIDS, serological studies were done on
108 HIV-infected haemophiliacs. In the 1· 3-9 years from time of first recognised HIV
seroconversion, the age-adjusted risk of CDC group IV disease in CMV-seropositive
patients was 2· 5 times that in CMV-seronegative patients. CMV-seropositive patients were
also more likely to have detectable p24 antigenaemia. Survival analysis showed that CMV …

The study, by Royal Free Hospital and School of Medicine researchers A. Webster and
colleagues, found that CDC-defined AIDS (CDC Group IV disease) occurred 2.5 times more

increased risk of AIDS in these patients began approximately two years after HIV
seroconversion.Webster et al. studied stored serum samples taken during routine patient
management from 108 HIV-seropositive patients with hemophilia A, hemophilia B, or von …
