This thesis is concerned with the application of model updating techniques to structures
whose dynamic performance is affected by static loading. The influence of structural loading
is identified as important in dynamical terms. As a result, experimentally determined dynamic
data should not necessarily be regarded as being uniquely representative of a structure.
This observation has particular significance to the likelihood of success of model updating.
