Sustainable development is a fundamental national policy in China, and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been integrated into the existing curriculum. This research examines how ESD is implemented and presented in curricula standards and high-school geography textbooks in China. An overview describing the scope and nature of the content as it relates to sustainable development will be followed by an analysis of the content and presentation of ESD in Chinese textbooks. Sustainable development is a major focus of geography textbooks for secondary-school students and is presented in the required Geography Two and Geography Three courses, as well as in certain optional courses. The article presents the subject outline of environmental education for primary and middle school students, a compilation standard for supplementary materials about environmental education and ESD.
