Earth slopes and high vertical cuts are frequently observed to be stable for long periods in
Tehran alluvium. This stability is attributed to cementation effects. In an attempt to assess the
shear strength behaviour of this gravely sandy soil, some artificially cemented specimens
were prepared and tested in a large direct shear test. Based on grading tests of Tehran
