Abstract
Agricultural production, especially food and horticulture (vegetables) by farmers on the island of Ternate adjusts to the availability of land according to the characteristics of the islands. The purpose of the study was to identify the characteristics of the land and the types of plants and the income from the cultivation of food crops and vegetables under plantation stands. The research was conducted in the field through observations, interviews and questionnaires, followed by a descriptive analysis to see opportunities for farming development. The results showed that 53% of agricultural land cultivation of food crops and vegetables was carried out on hilly terrain with a slope of 3-8 (sloping); 28% on a slope of 8-15% (slightly gentle) and only 9% of Ternate City farmers cultivate food and vegetable crops on 0-3% land (flat to slightly flat). The types of plants that are cultivated in an intercropping and rotating system are gambas vegetables, cucumber, long beans (Package I); Pulled kale and spinach (package II); Tomatoes and chilies (package III) and peanuts, corn (package IV); mixed vegetable wax, eggplant, papaya and bird banana (package V). The package I plants are mostly cultivated (44%), while the business opportunities based on price and consumer demand are package II plants (pulled kale and spinach). The value of the R/C ratio and the B/C ratio for food crops and horticulture (vegetables) farming packages I to package V in clove and nutmeg gardens is > 1, meaning that it is profitable to develop in island farmer farming.
