Within health service provision worldwide, the issue of how best to spend scarce resources
is unlikely to disappear. In North America, Europe, and Australasia, the need to ensure that
money is spent on treatment which is not only effective but also good value has spawned a
variety of ways of looking at outcome measures for healthcare provision. The extent to which
this is already affecting speech and language therapy (SLT) practice varies across countries,
but it is clearly becoming an issue for all of us.
