Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the use of veterinary drugs and chemical substances in a fish farm community in Ogun State, Nigeria. The study period was between March and June, 2018. The questionnaire was designed to gather information on the socio-demographic characteristics of fish farmers in the fish farm community, farming systems in operation, feed/water sanitation practices, incidence of disease outbreaks and control measures employed in over-coming disease challenges. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation were used in the analysis of the data and the results arranged in tables. The results obtained revealed that about 66.7 percent of the farmers used chemicals and disinfectants for water and pond treatments. About 57.14 percent of the farmers used drugs and40% chemical substances to treat diseases. Drugs and chemicals were prophylactically applied by 77.2 percent of the farmers and it was also observed that 79.55 percent of the farmers are not aware of any public health related hazards associated with such applications. Some of the drugs, chemical substances and disinfectants used by the farmers include oxytetracycline, procaine, industrial salt, isochlor, hypo®, super grow®, oxyveto®, aqua pro®, fish biotic®, kenflox®, floxinor®, formalin, livestokvit®, lime, potassium permanganate, chloramphenicol, ashes.
