The significance of secondary mastitis pathogens (coagulase-negative micrococci and C.
bovis) in mastitis control is discussed. Data taken from mastitis experiments carried out with
other objectives have been analysed; these show that secondary pathogens are capable of
producing slight leucocytosis, probably reduce milk yield, and may reduce new infection rate
with primary pathogens. It is concluded that a direct study on secondary pathogens is
required to determine their real significance.
