Past editorials in the Journal of Interprofessional Care have provided ideas about how sociological literature can help advance our conceptual, empirical and theoretical work in the interprofessional field (Reeves, 2011). This sociological literature about topics such as professionalization, division of healthcare labor, and professional jurisdictions, boundaries, and negotiations (Abbott, 1988; Freidson, 1970; Larson, 1977; Macdonald, 1995; Strauss et al., 1963; Willis, 1989; Witz, 1990), provide foundational knowledge about the formation of healthcare professional groups, their hierarchical natures, and the nature of interactions that aim to exert, preserve, or negotiate boundaries concerning each profession’s expert knowledge and practice. It is especially helpful to keep returning to these theories because they enable elicitation of new meanings and insights about interprofessional working as social, political and economic contexts change over time. As our current contexts are radically altered, these sociological theories can continue to provide guidance to our explorations of the significance and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to the practice and field of interprofessional healthcare.
