Lead, a heavy metal found in the Earth's crust, is a well-known toxicant to both children and adults (Benfer, 2017). Over the years, many safeguards have been put in place by the United States Government to reduce its citizens' lead exposure, such as outlawing lead in paints and petrol . Despite these safeguards, dangerous levels of lead in the blood are still found in American citizens, and those of low socio-economic status are over-represented . Furthermore, the effects of lead poisoning result in behaviours and characteristics that negatively affect people's ability to succeed in education or in the job market, reducing social mobility. This creates a positive feedback loop that leads to a lack of upward mobility for low socio-economic populations . Interventions to prevent lead exposure in low socio-economic status populations can be completed on the micro and macro levels, mainly using educational techniques and focusing on primary prevention (, ). This article explores the link between low socio-economic status and lead exposure in the United States, as well as ways in which public health professionals can help address the issue.
