I would like to begin by expressing my appreciation to President Mel Finkenberg and the
other members of the NAKPEHE Executive Committee who had a hand in my selection as
the Sixteenth Delphine Hanna Lecturer. It is a great honor, and humbling I might add, to now
be included on the list of other Hanna Lecturers who were among the top scholars and
leaders in their time, and many of whom still are today. And, if that weren't enough, I now

I would like to begin by expressing my appreciation to President Mel Finkenberg and the other members of the NAKPEHE Executive Committee who had a hand in my selection as the Sixteenth Delphine Hanna Lecturer. It is a great honor, and humbling I might add, to now be included on the list of other Hanna Lecturers who were among the top scholars and leaders in their time, and many of whom still are today. And, if that weren’t enough, I now realize how daunting a task it is to deliver a lecture to match the several I have read in my own preparation for today. As I started to think about what I might say today, I re-acquainted myself with Dr. Hanna’s life and work—just as previous lecturers have done. I say re-acquainted, because I first studied Dr. Hanna’s work and her legacy at Oberlin by taking a graduate course in Sport and Physical Education History from Bruce Bennett at Ohio State. Those who know Bruce and may have taken courses from him would understand how the subjects of his lectures stay in one’s memory for a long time. I am also reminded of Dr. Hanna’s place in our history when her name surfaces during a “History and Principles” course I teach to undergraduates at Georgia State. My students learn about Dr. Hanna by Googling their way through a cooperative learning exercise to report on key people and events in physical education during the last two decades of the 19th century. When they come across the now-familiar web site at Oberlin dedicated to Dr. Hanna (Oberlin College, 2006), they see the word “Pioneer” and her name in the very first sentence. And in every sense of that word, she was a pioneer: the first woman Physical Education instructor at Oberlin; the first to start a diploma course of study for future women Physical Education teachers; the first to start a 4-year program for physical education teachers, formally for women, but which also allowed limited male enrollment; the first woman to earn the rank of professor in physical education; and a charter member of several academic societies, in physical education and other disciplines.
