ABSTRACT
Increased green house gas emissions are expected to cause significant environmental and climatic changes. One of the important concerns in these efforts is that most of the CO2 generation sites are not necessarily close to the storage sites and this will require a network of pipelines for the transportation of the super critical CO2 to storage sites. The development of the pipeline infrastructure for transport of supercritical CO2 will play an important role in enabling carbon capture and storage (CCS) to be an integral part of power generation and reduction of green house gas emissions. Corrosion issues associated with impurities and contaminants in the CO2 have been studied by modelling the role of various impurities on the condensation of a second phase as well as performing electrochemical experiments in condensed phase conditions. The results of the work indicate that the presence of small amounts of water can cause a high corrosion rate in carbon steel, and the presence of amines like MEA (Mono Ethanol Amine) causes a significant decrease in the corrosion rate.
INTRODUCTION
The world wide demand for energy, especially clean energy, is expected to increase in the future, and associated with this increase is the possibilty of increased green house gas emissions. The increased greeen house gas emissions are expected to cause significant environmental and climatic changes. There is a significant effort in North America and Europe that is focused on carbon capture, transport and storage as part of an effort to mitigate the effects on climate change. There is a growing trend in the US to build power generation units that are clean and have the capability for carbon capture, transport, and storage. DOE has significant funding allocated for this effort in FY2009 as part of the FutureGEN clean coal effort. There is also an effort in CCS by EPRI which addresses technology issues relevant to utilities1. One of the important concerns in these efforts is that most of the CO2 generation sites are not necessarily close to the storage sites and this will demand a network of pipelines for the transportation of the super critical CO2 to storage sites. The development of the pipeline infrastructure for transport of supercritical CO2 will play an important role in enabling the CCS to be an integral part of power generation and reduction of green house gas emissions. The integrity of pipelines carrying supercrtical CO2 has not been widely studied and the materials issues associated with transport of supercritical CO2 have been explored even less. Typically it is expected that power generation from different sources of fuels. It is reasonable to expect that during the carbon capture process that these impurities are carried with the CO2 and may be transported with the CO2. It is also very likely that supercritical CO2 from various sources will co-mingle in the main transport lines to storage sites which would lead to a wide range of impurties that may be of concern to the integrity of the pipelines.
