It has been demonstrated that in humans severe protein-calorie malnutrition in early childhood is strongly associated with retarded brain growth and development [34, 41], with disturbances in central nervous system function and with retarded cognitive development [6, 28, 38]. On the other hand, the association of less severe malnutrition with mental retardation is not as clear [32].
