You might be familiar with the term epistemological: essentially, how we know what we know. In science, it comprises the philosophies and subsequent methods of understanding nature, including human nature. For example, EI/ECSE might be perceived from a behavioral, single-subject point of view. This perspective convinces us through experiments showing individual children’s data, over time, and how the data change depending on experimental conditions, such as baseline and intervention. Another perspective is to look at EI/ECSE from a statistical point of view. From this perspective, differences in group means (averages), such as between experimental and control groups or how certain predictors affect certain outcomes, are examined. Another perspective is to look at EI/ECSE from a qualitative point of view. At a micro level, this approach deals with narratives—stories and perspectives of families and others. These points of view reflect different epistemologies.
