Background: Prior reports on metabolic derangements observed in distance running
frequently have small sample sizes, lack prerace laboratory measures, and report sodium as
the sole measure. Hypothesis: Metabolic abnormalities—hyponatremia, hypokalemia, renal
dysfunction, hemoconcentration—are frequent after completing a full or half marathon.
