Processes influencing ozone levels in Alaskan forest fire plumes during long‐range transport over the North Atlantic

A case of long‐range transport of a biomass burning plume from Alaska to Europe is
analyzed using a Lagrangian approach. This plume was sampled several times in the free
troposphere over North America, the North Atlantic and Europe by three different aircraft
during the IGAC Lagrangian 2K4 experiment which was part of the ICARTT/ITOP
measurement intensive in summer 2004. Measurements in the plume showed enhanced
values of CO, VOCs and NOy, mainly in form of PAN. Observed O3 levels increased by 17 …

Processes Influencing Ozone Levels in Forest Fire Plumes During Long-Range Transport Across the North Atlantic
E Real, K Law, G Ancellet, H Schlager… - AGU Fall Meeting …, 2005 - ui.adsabs.harvard.edu
In summer 2004, plumes from intense forest fires over Alaska and Canada were observed
during the IGAC Lagrangian 2K4/European ITOP (Intercontinental Transport of Ozone and
Precursors) campaign. Lagrangian analysis using trajectory based tools showed that forest
fires plumes were sampled several time by different platforms over the North Atlantic and
Europe. These plumes were characterised by high levels of CO, VOC, PAN, forest fires
aerosols and large increases in ozone levels between data collected over western Atlantic …
