This paper explores appropriate strategies to eliminate the constraints faced by young people in integrating into the productive and social life in rural communities in Latin America, and thereby stemming the population drift towards urban centres. It is suggested that both the government and the community in rural areas must change their way of thinking and come to terms with the fact that 'rural' is not necessarily synonymous with 'agricultural'. Policies, development measures, and investments in infrastucture and training must be geared towards a heterogeneous rural environment that allows for a multidisciplinary vision for the rural life of tomorrow.
