It was found that in the area studied the millipede species Streptogonopus phipsoni is
abundant during June and October whereas numbers are low during winter and early
summer. The majority of millipedes occurred on the soil surface, with a small percentage
underground; during the winter however most millipedes were found at a depth of 15 cm.
85% of the population were juveniles; these were motionless and formed heaps whereas
the adults were active and dispersive. Males and females occurred in the ratio 1: 1.
