Abstract
Eleven cut-flower rose cultivars, 5 of which were bred in India, were compared for performance. Three-year-old field-grown bushes, budded on Rosa indica cv. Odorata rootstock and planted at 45 × 45 cm, were pruned in mid-Oct. to a height of 45 cm to retain 4 shoots/plant. Data are presented on the following: numbers of primary and secondary shoots, shoot length, basal diameter of orginal shoots, pruned weight of shoots and leaves, flower bud size, diameter of expanded flower, number of petals/flower, longevity of flower on plant, vase life of cut flower, number of days to appearance of first flower bud and to flower bud opening after pruning, number of flowers with stems >60 cm, 45-59 cm and <45 cm long, and total annual yield of flowers/plant. The cultivar Eiffel Tower had the greatest stem length, highest numbers of flowers and shoots and greatest pruned weight of shoots and leaves. Raktagandha had the greatest shoot diameter. Sonia Meilland was the earliest to flower after pruning. Flowers lasted on the plant for the longest time in Cara Mia. Vase life was longest (10.6 days) in Raja Surendra Singh of Nalagarh, followed by Dr. B. P. Pal (9.8 days). Flower diameter was greatest (10.7 cm) in Arjun. The number of petals/flower was lowest (18.2) in Raja Surendra Singh of Nalagarh and highest (47.8) in Dr. B. P. Pal. The highest percentages of grade A (stems >60 cm), grade B (45-59 cm) and grade C (<45 cm) flowers were obtained from Queen Elizabeth (followed by Sonia Meilland), Dr. B. P. Pal and Priyadarshini, respectively.
