Standards-Based and Specifications Grading (SBSG) is a technique for assessment that has seen significant use in K-12 education and is increasingly being employed in the post-secondary context. An entry-point to SBSG is Linda B. Nilson's book: Specifications Grading: Restoring Rigor, Motivating Students, and Saving Faculty Time. There exist rich communities providing support for using SBSG, such as a SBSG-focused Google+ group. Very visible work in SBSG is in Mathematics courses (e.g., the work of Robert Talbert and Kate Owens). However, examples of SBSG in computer science are less common.
