Background
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease disabling of young adults. Epidemiological studies conducted in Algeria show an increase in prevalence and suggest a more aggressive phenotype of the disease in MS patients. The aim of study is to describe the clinical course features of MS patients and to estimate the median time to the sustained Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores 4.0, 6.0 and 7.0.
Material(s) and Method(s)
It is descriptive monocentric longitudinal study conducted at the Neurology department of university Hospital center of Oran over a period of 14 years (01/01/2008 to 01/05/2022). Patients included in the study were diagnosed according McDonald criteria 2005 - 2010. Demographic, clinical course and Kurtzke's Extended Disability Status Scale (EDSS) of 4.0, 6.0, 7.0 dates were collected. The time to reach an EDSS scale of 4.0, 6.0, and 7.0 was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier analysis. SPSS version 20.0 was used to analysis all data collected.
Result(s)
291 patients were included in this study. The mean age at onset was 29.44 (± 9.59) years with a clear female predominance (200 female/91 male). The average duration of disease was 13 (± 6) year.82,2% of patients had the relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). Median time to reach EDSS scores 4.0, 6.0 and 7.0 were 12 (95% confidence interval (CI): 9,46 – 14,53, 14 (95% CI: 10,72 – 15,27) and 19 years (95% CI: 14,11 – 23,88), respectively.
Conclusion(s)
This study show an agressive phenotype of MS in our population suggesting an earlier treatment with immunosuppressive therapy.
