CURREnt interest in micro air vehicle (MAV) aerodynamics and insect flight has resulted in
many new experiments in the field of unsteady low Reynolds number aerodynamics. At the
low Reynolds numbers O (102− 104) typical of insect and MAV flight, it can be convenient to
perform experiments in water or other liquids. The relatively high density and viscosity of
water allows for larger wings, lower wing speeds, and higher aerodynamic forces than
