The dynamics of cognitive interviewing

Methods for testing and evaluating survey questionnaires, 2004•Wiley Online Library
The primary goal of this chapter is to explore what actually happened in one set of cognitive
interviews: what the interviewers actually did, how the content of the interview affected what
they did (and how their behavior affected the subsequent content of the interview), and
ultimately, how the dynamics of the cognitive interview affected the conclusions that were
drawn. The investigation opens up questions about what specific probing strategies
cognitive interviewers employ, and whether they do anything other than probe per se.
