Background Individuals with panic disorder (PD) exhibit a hypersensitivity to inhaled carbon
dioxide, possibly reflecting a lowered threshold for sensing signals of suffocation. Animal
studies have shown that carbon dioxide–mediated fear behavior depends on chemosensing
