This chapter reviews the occurrence, importance and potential threats of Phytophthora to
agriculture and natural ecosystems in Africa. The late blight of potato and tomato caused by
P. infestans, black pod disease caused by P. palmivora and P. megakarya, avocado root
root caused by P. cinnamomi, Phytophthora spp. in plantation forestry, and Phytophthora
spp. in native environments are discussed.
