American Ceramic Society Bulletin;(United States), 1993•osti.govCeramic composites are very attractive for structural applications because of high melting
temperature, light weight, and high stiffness imparted by the reinforcement. Toughened
Silcomp composites have been developed at General Electric Company (GE). These
composites are processed by melt infiltration of molten silicon into a carbonaceous preform
containing coated fibers of the desired composition. The process is based on infiltration and
is an extension of technology developed earlier at GE.
