Abstract
The main objective of this research was to control the formation of biofilm on the urinary catheter because biofilm infections spread in the urethra and sometimes become the cause of death. zinc oxide (ZnO) coating was done on the silicon rubber urinary catheter to reduce the biofilm formation because it exhibits antibacterial properties. It has a large surface area relative to its size. The coating was done by the RF sputtering method to enhance the deposition of Zinc Oxide nanoparticles on Silicon rubber urinary catheter. The deposition was characterised by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-Ray diffraction. Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of ZnO were also investigated in the present work. As the urinary catheter works in an aqueous medium, some physical changes happen in the catheter. Swelling tests were also performed to study the physical changes. Optical microscopy, SEM and XRD analysis confirmed the coating of ZnO over the silicon rubber urinary catheters. It was observed that the mechanical properties remain nearly the same, but biofilm formation and percentage swelling reduced significantly after ZnO coating. The swelling in the uncoated sample was around 22.7% while swelling in the coated sample was just 7.7%.
