Paragangliomas arise from sympathetic or parasympathetic paraganglia and should now be
defined by their site and type. The term pheochromocytoma is reserved for intraadrenal
tumors. This short review discusses the gross and microscopic features, the
immunohistochemical profile, the problem of recognizing malignant potential, and the rare
instances where a differential diagnosis has to be considered.
