Background Stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) using ranitidine, a histamine H2 receptor
antagonist, has been associated with an increased risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia.
The proton pump inhibitor (PPI) pantoprazole is also commonly used for SUP. PPI use has
